Following his Covent Garden debut, Rafael Payare joins the London Symphony Orchestra for  a performance of Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Gubaidulina’s “Fairytale Poem,” and Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto, performed by soloist Vilde Frang (February 23).

Later in the spring, Payare travels to Munich, again conducting Gubaidulina’s “Fairytale Poem.” The program also includes Strauss’s Don Quixote with soloists Jano Lisboa (viola) and Michael Hell (cello) and Rachmaninov’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 2 with pianist Kyoheu Sorita (March 22–24).

In early April, Payare conducts the Cleveland Orchestra, leading Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony and Bernstein’s Symphony No. 2, “The Age of Anxiety,” with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet (April 6–8). Payare then travels to Los Angeles, conducting Still’s Darker America, Brahms’s First Symphony, and Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder with the LA Phil and soprano Dorothea Röschmann (April 13, 15, 16).
